ICPA’s 2021 Conference – Sharing Knowledge in Corrections

​BSAFE LAB will be presenting in three workshops at this three-day online event.


ICPA’s 2021 Annual Conference is set to occur in an online format from October 26th to the 28th. Research presentations from BSAFE LAB’s projects will be held by Vitor Costa and Nuno Garcia.

On the first day, in a workshop about “Professionalising Correctional Staff” taking place from 17:50 WEST, researcher Vitor Costa from BSAFE LAB/University of Beira Interior, will co-present about “Challenges, profile, competencies and training of the European prison officer of the 21st century”. This presentation shared with Adrian Neagoe, Vice-President of National Trade Union of Prison Workers (SNLP, Romania) is related to the project PO21 – “European Prison Officers for the 21st Century”.

Also on the 26th, from 19:50 WEST, Professor Nuno Garcia, Chair at BSAFE LAB, will co-present “Contributing to prison security, inmate’s rehabilitation, and social reinsertion, through regular video contact with inmates’ families during the pandemic” with Dave Lageweg, Chief Business Officer of Telio Group. The presentation will be integrated in the workshop “Challenges Managing Health Crisis”.

On the 27th, within the workshop themed “European Reform Initiatives”, researcher Vitor Costa, now with IPS’s Chief Research Officer, Pedro Liberado, will talk about their research paper “One size does not fit all: An analysis of exit programmes implemented in European prison and probation settings”. This scientific article was developed within the scope of the WayOut project (Integrated Exit Programme for Prison and Probation). The workshop will take place from 16:50 to 17:15 WEST.

The ICPA Annual Conference 2021 features around 70 workshops and over 130 speakers from around the world. To accommodate attendees from all over the globe, the schedule of each conference day will be organised around the working hours of a different time zone (New York, Paris and Sydney, respectively). The presentations will also be made available to watch later, on-demand.
